Since the Parish of Ballarat was established in 1852, the life of the Church has centred around the celebration of the sacraments, outreach and service, justice, education, healthcare, welfare and evangelisation.

In 2011 the National Church LIfe survey called for a Mass count of all attending Sunday Masses over the four Sundays of May. This count was conducted in the Cathedral Parish at each Mass.
