The Cathedral is a significant building in the life of Rockhampton and Central Queensland. It has an important place in the civic and cultural activities of the region. The Cathedral is open during the day, as an oasis of peace and tranquility in the busyness of a major provincial City. Situated in the Central Business District, surrounded by lawn and garden, St. Paul's welcomes people who come to sit quietly, to pray, or to light a candle for a special intention.

St. Paul's Cathedral is the Mother Church of the Anglican Diocese of Rockhampton. As such, the Cathedral is the principal mission church of the Diocese, the seat of the Bishop. It focuses the spiritual life of Anglicans throughout Central and Western Queensland. With our emphasis on ecumenism, St. Paul's Cathedral is particularly involved with other churches in the region.

The Cathedral is a Parish Church. There is a regular congregation, and the rector is pastorally responsible for Anglicans within a geographical area on the south side of the City of Rockhampton. Within the Parish is a large Roman Catholic private hospital, two nursing homes, three primary schools and two large independent schools, all of which are under the care of the Rector of St. Paul's Parish.
